Summer Research Camp
A fun, collaborative experience for students who love history!
Tuesday, July 12 - Thursday, July 21, 2022
Students will work together to brainstorm ideas and give feedback to each other as they participate in the full project-based course focusing on finding resources, writing a thesis and being able to support it on a history topic of the student’s choice.
Tuition for this camp is $300, and is available for students in grades 5-8.
-
Prior to the start of session, your student will meet with Mrs. Nelson virtually or in person. Together a topic for their project will be chosen. Students are free to investigate topics from local history, US history to world history, from ancient times to the recent past. The student will choose from one of five ways to present their project. Those ways are: Historical paper, Exhibit, Performance, Documentary, or Website.
-
When sessions start, students will decide on their thesis statement. That thesis statement will determine the direction of their research. Students will be taught how to identify primary and secondary sources that relate to their topic. They will also be taught how to create a Annotated Bibliography of their chosen resources in standard MLA format.
Students will create their entry in their chosen format. They will write a process paper explaining the relationship of their topic to the contest theme. Possible contest themes include:
•Debate and Diplomacy in History: Successes, Failures, Consequences
•Family and Community in History
•Turning Points in History
•Liberty: Rights and Responsibilities in History
•Geography in History
•Science and Technology in History
•Revolution, Reaction, Reform in History
-
Projects will be evaluated via a rubric provided by the National History Day organization. Historical Quality is 80% and Clarity of Presentation is 20%. Mrs. Nelson will schedule a time to celebrate the completed projects after the learning sessions end at a time to be decided upon collaboratively with parents and students.
-
Our first session will be held at the Lexington County Main Library located at 5440 Augusta Rd, Lexington, SC 29072. Location of other sessions will be at library or Mrs. Nelson’s home in Lexington.
